It’s Dirk.” Warm, gentle hands wiped the hair from her face, pushing it back out of her way.

He pulled at the crate rocking it back and forth, keeping her head above water. “I’m so sorry, Lina. I tried to stop them.”It was Dirk. Thank God. She blinked. What was wrong with his face? The puffiness was scary. Her eyes must be playing tricks on her.He towed her ashore and cut the silver intertwined rope with a knife. Then he nourished her. While they both lay there under the stars, Dirk took his knife, placed the blade against his wrist….“No! You can’t,” she whispered, her voice giving out on her.“You’re weak, Lina.

You must.”“But, its wrong. Isn’t it?” When she said it, she sounded like a small child. She felt like a small child needing protection. Was it wrong to take someone’s blood? Hadn’t that been what she’d always been told?“No Lina. It’s not. We are Vampires. They can’t change us just because they make laws forbidding us to drink blood straight from the source.” The air was suddenly and gloriously filled with the aroma of sweet Vampire red blood cells. It was intoxicating. “That’s what your mom is fighting for: Our freedom of choice and the right to be what we were born to be.

Vampires. That’s why my mom supports her.”Lina looked deeply into Dirk’s sultry, yet, still swollen, eyes—eyes that were marveling at her- eyes that said she was the most beautiful creature to grace the face of this Earth, even though she must look a wreck—as he placed his wrist at her mouth. This was a first for her. She’d never dreamed this could happen. She was overwhelmed with the need. And, she drank.Tentatively, never breaking eye contact, she flicked her tongue over and across his wrist. Dirk’s eyes grew brilliantly large at her touch.

“Are you sure?” She asked, definitely sure of her longing- because that little taste was the best blood she’d ever tried. Bar none. Lina was eager to drink deeply.“I’m positive.”In the perfect world of Vampires, one little misfit stands out among the crowd…. However, it’s a horrible sensation to feel like you are alone in the world, I mean, who wants to stand out?

Yet, this is where Lina finds herself. Midget is what the cruel kids—well, specifically one impossible boy that Lina has had a crush on since, forever—nicknamed her. She stands a little more than four feet, whereas, the perfect Vampires (everyone else) stand closer to six feet or taller, much taller.

Her mother is too busy getting elected the next Head Chancellor of New Transylvania (or, Whoville as Lina calls it) to worry over Lina’s trivial social issues. And, when it comes to light that Lina may be half-human, gulp, she is even abandoned by her BFF, Sharlene. To top it all off, she is having major boy problems.

The drama just never goes away.As the celebration of All Hallows’ Eve approaches, Lina discovers that not only is she a half-human midget freak, but her nighttime vision is degenerating to nil. (A very bad thing for Vampires) Clumsy as all get-up, she must overcome her fixation for the need to fit in—an impossible task for someone so small—and, hardest of all, she must overcome her own deep prejudices.

One particular boy comes to mind, but I won’t spoil it for you. Suffice it to say, he’s been right in front of her the entire time.
