The novel’s compass covers cycles of maturing and downfall of Callum Mor – gifted child, master mariner, derelict drunk - who gains wisdom from a hard life’s journey. Laced with grim humor and resilience, nature’s harsh and beautiful rhapsody is the background to tragic human failings – violence, power, rape, desertion, deceit, murder and madness. The failings are ultimately topped by the triumph of human decency. The Epilogue is a poem to the resilience of the human spirit.Callum Mor’s character is epic and takes the reader on a deep Hero’s Journey. Following lyrical childhood adventures with otters and unlikely mentors, Callum Mor loses his father to madness, his brother to murder, his sister abandons the family in shame and through grievous misunderstandings he loses Catriona – the love of his life.

The death of his mother is the final straw. Callum Mor snaps and in a period of self-destructive alcoholism, steps into isolation. A young family seeking refuge at his house one storm laden day begins his return to an astonishing awareness that triumphs over his tragedies. This is the author’s eighth book and first novel.

Written in 1975 it remained lost for 36 years until rediscovered in the spring of 2011. Critical friends were as astonished as the author – one wondered about the screenplay, another cried all the way through – all of which brought “Song of Silence” to life. The novel is an allegory for the life difficulties experienced by the author at that time. How could he have written such a book when he was a total mess - failing marriage in the Hebrides and maintaining a university career in Canada? He was not doing a good job with either – yet somehow wrote this book!
